How the fairytale began

When they made their first public appearance at Sonam and Anand's wedding reception, Ranbir and Alia made heads turn. From then to now, fan-favorite B-town couples have come a long way. Filmfare takes this opportunity to chart their unique and romantic love story. Alia had revealed very early on, that she had her first crush on Ranbir Kapoor ever since she was a mere eleven-year-old. Reacting to the statement, Ranbir Kapoor, the other half of this power couple said, “Well, I have a boy crush on her now.”The two individuals later came together to create Brahmastra, directed by Ayan Mukerji. While shooting for the movie in the midst of snow-capped mountains in Bulgaria, both the actors deeply fell in love with each other. They began their romantic rendezvous in 2017, back when the press was rife with news of their mutual admiration.

Making the love story official

After their first public appearance at Anand Ahuja and Sonam Kapoor’s wedding, the couple got unfailing love and support from friends and family. This made way for the countless public appearances that followed. This included family weddings, brunches, and dinner parties. In September 2018, when Ranbir’s father Rishi Kapoor got admitted to a hospital in New York, the couple was often seen visiting together. Shortly after, Ranbir got candid in an interview with a magazine and confirmed his relationship. He said, "It’s really new right now, and I don’t want to overspeak. It needs time to breathe and it needs space. As an actor, as a person, Alia is – what’s the right word? – flowing right now. When I see her work, when I see her act, even in life, what she gives is something that I’m aspiring to for myself. It’s new for us, so let it cook a bit." But they made a place in not only each other’s hearts but also in their families. Shortly after Ranbir’s interview went viral, Alia’s father Mahesh Bhatt was questioned about their budding relationship. To this, he said, "Well, of course, they’re in love. You don’t need to be a genius to get that! I love Ranbir… he’s a great guy. What they do to their relationship is something they’ll have to figure out. Whether it’s heading towards that port called ‘marriage’ — which is an institution that needs to be questioned in the second decade of the 21st century — is something for them to figure out."

All the big moments

Shortly after in 2019, the 64th Filmfare Awards was graced with the couple’s presence. The couple truly proved their mettle as both actors won Best Actor and Best Actress Awards respectively. While Ranbir Kapoor bagged the award for Sanju, Alia Bhatt bagged one for Raazi. Later in an interview, Alia confessed that their moment together on stage was a perfect moment for her. She shared an AMA (ask me anything) Youtube video, where the fans asked her about her most memorable day in 2019. To this, she replied, "Well, there have been quite a few memorable days. But I think for me, the most special moment was when I received my Filmfare award and also Ranbir had just received his Filmfare Award. There was a moment of us on stage and pictures were clicking, that was the most memorable moment. I kind of imagined it in my head and it came true."

Soon after at another award, the couple danced to Ishq Wala Love, and fans couldn’t help but swoon at their everlasting chemistry. If you think this checks their relationship bucket list, wait till you see their vacation pictures. Taking a break from their busy schedule, and celebrating their wins the couple jet-setted on a vacation in Africa. In September of 2019, Alia shared a Safari vlog, where she was seen with her beau, Ranbir in Kenya. Ranbir is probably the one who helped Alia shoot her vlog.

Going through the tough times together

The pandemic had affected the lives of both actors tragically. After the passing of Ranbir’s Kapoor father, both the actors were left heartbroken. It is reported that they were pillars of strength to each other. After the senior actor passed away from a two-year-long battle with leukemia, his final rites were performed by his wife Neetu Kapoor and son Ranbir Kapoor. Alia Bhatt who was also part of the ceremony couldn’t hold back her tears. She was also seen consoling Neetu Kapoor and video calling Ranbir’s sister Riddhima Jain who couldn’t be a part of the ceremony. Alia heavily grieved the loss of Rishi Kapoor. In a moving Instagram post, she wrote, “What can I say. About this beautiful man... who brought soo much love and goodness into my life. Today, everyone speaks of the legend that is Rishi Kapoor... and though I’ve known him like that all my life... for the past two years I’ve known him as a friend, a fellow Chinese food lover, a total cinema lover, a fighter, a leader, a beautiful storyteller, an extremely passionate tweeter and a father! In these past two years, the love I have received from him is like a warm hug that I will always cherish!” However, with each other by their sides, they made it through the tough times.

Coming back stronger

In September 2021, the actors flew down to the Sujan Jawai Camp in Rajasthan to celebrate Ranbir’s 39th birthday. The actress took to her Instagram to post a beautiful picture of them by the lake. She captioned the post, “happy birthday my life”. Recently, during a promotional event for Gangubai Kathiawadi, Alia Bhatt spoke about her romantic relationship with Ranbir, she said, “I’m already married to Ranbir Kapoor in my head. And, I think I’ve been married to him in my head for a long time. I feel like the timing of even when we get married, it’s all going to work out in all the right and beautiful ways.” Meanwhile, their new home is also nearing completion. Ranbir and Alia have refurbished their family home, the Krishna Raj bungalow. The bungalow which is now reportedly being converted to a fifteen-story building is located in Bandra’s Pali Hill. The first five floors of this house will be saved for the Kapoors, Alia-Ranbir, and Neetu Kapoor. The remaining ten floors will be rented out. The couple is likely to move in here after their alleged wedding. The couple has been through the good times and tough times, and come out stronger than ever. The couple is allegedly all set to begin their wedding rituals on the 13th of April at the RK Bungalow. Filmfare wishes them a very happy and fulfilling future ahead.
